Obituary

Ezell Howard Vaughn, Jr., affectionately referred to as both “Howard” and “Sonny” was the second of six children born to the late Ezell Howard Vaughn Sr. and the late Charlotte Booth. He was born in Philadelphia on August 20, 1933 and peacefully entered his eternal rest on October 14, 2019.

Sonny was born and raised in Philadelphia and attended the original Northeast Highschool. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and received an Honorable Discharge after four years of service.

Following a brief enrollment at Temple University, he was hired by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as an Apprentice Mechanical Trades Welder and advanced himself to Senior Technical Specialist for shipboard computer applications; no small fete considering the obstacles minorities faced in such a highly skilled work environment.

His 49 year marriage to the late Marian L. Cornish, was one of much envy. Their love for one another defied definition. Of this union one daughter, Vanessa Ivy Vaughn was born. Marian’s passing in November of 2010 left a discernible void in his life.

“Sonny” (Howard), was a fun-loving person who will be dearly missed by everyone whose life he touched. He was not a fire and brimstone bible toting person but considered himself of Christian and Baptist faith. Without difficulty, he could quote many passages from the bible which were relevant for the discussion at hand.

He was truly a teacher and role model to others with his passion as a fisherman, gardener and craftsmen, among other things. Bringing up the subject of fishing, would bring light to his eyes! He couldn’t resist telling his stories about who caught the biggest fish, and it was always you know who!

He was also very athletic. He enjoyed going to the gym and entered running marathons, including the Broad Street Run and several others.

One can’t forget his attachment to Volkswagen cars, of which he owned a few. He loved dismantling and rebuilding the engines, transmissions, electrical systems and even doors. He was so well versed, he could build a Volkswagen from bumper to bumper using the parts he collected, which littered a special room in his basement.

Amongst his cherished times were spent taking trips with Marian to California to visit his daughter, Vanessa and grandchildren, Adrienne and Zachary, where he spent his final days.

Sonny leaves behind to love and embrace his memories, his devoted daughter Vanessa Vaughn-Springs, two grandchildren, Adrienne and Zachary, one brother, Kenneth L. Vaughn (Sharon), one sister, Linda A Smith (Eric), and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends all of whom loved him dearly. His sister Linda, niece Evie and several of his nieces and family played a significant role in his caregiving until he left Philadelphia to stay with his daughter Vanessa who cared for him unconditionally until his passing.
