Michael Redd

Michael Eugene Redd was born on April 1, 1955, in Philadelphia, PA.  He was one of seven children born to the late Eugene Richmond Redd of Farmville, VA and the late Mary Ann Boatwright Redd of Cordele, GA.

He was educated in the Catholic school system.  Mike attended The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Elementary School and graduated from St. John Neumann High School in 1974.  After graduating from high school, Mike joined the U.S. Marine Corps and completed his basic training at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC.  He also spent several years stationed in Riverside, CA and then in Okinawa, Japan.  Mike served for 17 years in the military and achieved the rank of Gunnery Sargent. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.

After retiring from the military, Mike took up permanent residence in Jacksonville, NC where he continued his trade as an automobile mechanic specializing in diesel engines.  Mike made many friends in Jacksonville, NC and was very social in his community.  He joined the Freemasons and arose to the rank of Master Mason, 32nd Degree.  He was also an avid car enthusiast, who owned several classic cars and travelled to car shows across the country.  Mike enjoyed riding his friends’ children around on his ATV, and watching drag races. His neighbors spoke very fondly of him and described him as “a good man, a good neighbor, and a good friend.”

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Mary Redd, his sisters Inez Wheeler and April Redd, and his daughter Krystal Lynn Redd.

Mike departed this life on December 9, 2019 in Jacksonville, NC.  He leaves to mourn his loss his daughters, Meschelle Redd and Shantel Redd of Philadelphia, PA; two brothers, Melvin Redd of Cumberland, VA and Curtis Redd of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters, Gwendolyn Riley of Philadelphia, PA and Nzuri Mtumishi of Collegeville, PA; two aunts, Evelyn Lewis of Cordele, GA and Vivian Robertson of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, two brothers-in-law, extended family, life-long friends, and his closest friends, Lamont and Melissa Carter and Dalton Berry of Jacksonville, NC.
