Obituary

Granville Lycurtis Hazzard Sr., affectionately known as Googey or Pops, was born on November 21, 1934 in Argos’ Corner, Delaware to the late William P. and Aletha S. Hazzard. He transitioned into eternity on October 8, 2019, at 8:40am in Towson, Maryland.

Granville Sr. was educated at Slaughter Neck School and attended William C Jason High School for Secondary Education. Shortly thereafter, he served in the US Army. Granville Sr. received his GED from Groves Adult High School in Woodside, Delaware in 1974. He retired from the State of Delaware in 1989 after over 20 years of work as a State Mail Courier.

As a young man, Granville Sr. attended the old Wesley Chapel Methodist Church along with his mother and other siblings where he participated in many programs. He received salvation in March 1983 at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Pastor Melissa Dukes and donated the use of his building to the ministry for many years. Later, Granville Sr. attended Beth-El Ministries CPC in Denton, MD under the pastorate of his son, Elder Granville Hazzard Jr.

Granville Sr. was a gifted musician who played Saxophone with Lil Rudy and the House Rockers, the Kings of Soul, and for many church and community functions. He also enjoyed going to yard sales, thrift shops, and breakfast at Westside Diner with Charles “Ricky” Parker.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucinda; parents, William and Aletha Hazzard; brothers: Willis Hazzard, Floyd S. Hazzard, and Reginald Hazzard Sr.; and sisters: Cleora V. Wright and Bernice Loper. He is survived by his four children: Norma-Lee Copper-Hazzard, Bruce Copper-Hazzard, Granville Hazzard Jr. (Felisa), Darrin Davis (Shirley); two sisters: Claretta M. Davis and Irene D. Hazzard; one sister-in-law, Betty Lou Hazzard; eight grandchildren: Keith Eley, Bryant Hazzard, Cherise Hazzard, Phillip Hazzard, Sheila LaCroix, Andrew Hazzard, Shyla LaCroix, and Brittany Copper; two great grandchildren; close friends: Maurice Young, Ferris Young, Richard Dean, and Rozelle Dukes Sr.; adopted sons: Charles “Ricky” Parker and Thaddeus Shockley Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
