Marsha Coleman

Marsha Coleman was the fifth of seven children born to the late Wilbert Leroy and Viola Samuels Coleman on June 10, 1955. She was born at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Marsha was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. She attended M. Hall Stanton Elementary School, Warren G. Harding Junior High and earned her diploma from Olney High School in June 1972. She studied business/clerical skills as a major.

She professed her love of the Lord at an early age. Marsha was baptized at the Moore’s Memorial Baptist Church by the late Rev. James Stewart.

As a young woman, she was blessed with a daughter, Brandy Hennie, whom she loved dearly. Marsha was doubly blessed with the births of two grandsons, Robert and Jaisen who brought great joy to her life. She adored them and they likewise adored their grandmom.

She was employed at K-Mart for a period of time. Years later, she earned her CNA Certificate and worked at the Elmira Jeffries Home for many years, until they closed. She was also employed at the Philadelphia Nursing Home, Bala Nursing Home and Total Health Home Care. Health issues necessitated her leaving the workforce on disability.

Marsha learned to sew, knit and crochet from her mother, Viola. She became a whiz at crocheting toilet paper holders, scarves and hats. In addition, she took up the craft of Latch Hook rug making to pass the time.

In her youth, she and Renee spent many hours playing Jax and jumping rope because the girls had to stay on the block. She was a pretty good Pinochle and Rummy 500 player. Many evening hours were spent playing Pinochle at their vacation rental in Dewey Beach, Delaware. She enjoyed the time spent with family, playing Monopoly. In addition, she enjoyed time spent with family at holiday gatherings, picnics and get togethers.

As teenagers, Marsha and Renee were the babysitters. They babysat for nephews Charles and Steven, as well as their brother, Michael. Their neighborhood friends would often gather on the porch on Lycoming Street. Because the boys were with them throughout the summer, neighbors thought they were their children. Nobody gave her a hard time, because she was quite stern and took “no mess” from the young ones, or anyone else for that matter.

Marsha’s health issues became more prevalent over the last few years. Her last hospitalization was extensive and one from which she did not recover. Although we loved her, Jesus loved her more. The Lord saw her suffering and stepped in to relieve her burdens on the morning of February 4, 2021. He took her home to join her loved ones, who are now rejoicing with her.

Marsha was jovial, loving and kind toward her family. An empty space will be left with her passing. She leaves to mourn her loss: one daughter, Brandy Hennie; two grandsons, Robert Smith and Jaisen Smith; siblings Carolyn Kelly, Allen, Ronald, Waverly (Doreen), Renee and Michael; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
