Wanda Michele (Henderson) Hook, devoted wife, mother and matriarch, was called home to be with GOD on March 7, 2021 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Wanda was born on April 20, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to father, Mack Henderson Sr. and mother Roberta Henderson who preceded her in death. She was proudly raised in North Philadelphia where she was the youngest of 9 children in a big loving family.

Wanda was educated in the Philadelphia public school system where she attended Fels Junior High School and Simon Gratz High School; she was a proud bulldog. She was known for her love of dancing and socializing. As a popular member of a neighborhood social club, she affectionately earned the nickname “Kool Kandy.” That cool demeanor, affable nature and “tell it like it is” candor would become the calling cards that endeared Wanda to so many over the years as she became a beloved fixture of her close-knit community.

Wanda met the love of her life and soul-mate, Kelvin Hook, in January 1972 and from this union they were blessed with four daughters. They had their first daughter, Shanae, in 1975. Followed by Shakia in 1983, Shatara in 1986 and Shanya in 1996. Wanda dedicated her life to her husband and her girls, never missing an event or milestone. Her home was open to anyone and was often filled with family, friends, love, laughter and her delicious cooking; a family favorite was her macaroni & cheese. She loved music and would often be spotted rocking while singing her favorite Teddy Pendergrass and Gerald Levert songs. She was also a basketball fanatic and would happily debate with anyone about her Philadelphia 76ers.

Although Wanda gave birth to four daughters, she had many children because of her nurturing spirit — nieces, nephews and friends were loved and cared for as if they were her own children. Wanda loved people and enjoyed making others happy, whether that meant a conversation, a meal or simply being present to listen and provide support. She offered an open heart, wise counsel and a solid shoulder to lean on whenever she was able to do so.

Wanda enjoyed working and serving her community. She was a Subscription Clerk at TV Guide for nearly 20 years. During her time there, her charismatic personality and strong work ethic garnered her numerous recognitions and a loving work family. Wanda was committed to her community, where she served as block captain for the 7800 block of Rugby Street for several years. She also served as a committee member for the 50th Ward and was actively involved in voter registration, campaigning and providing election day support at the polls.

Wanda was the matriarch of her family. Her home was the gathering place for holidays, special occasions and sometimes for no reason at all except to give and receive love. Wanda was well-known for her barbecues and prom send-off parties. When she wasn’t hosting at home she loved to shop and dine out with her best friend, Geneva Jones, or spend hours on the phone with her sister, Cynthia, or one of her nieces. She especially loved caring for her grandchildren, never turning down an opportunity to spend time with them. She was known by her grandchildren as “Meme” “Mom-Mom” and “Mom”.

Wanda leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Kelvin Hook; daughters, Shanae Hook, Shakia Dayas, Shatara Green and Shanya Hook; son-in-law(s) Claude Dayas and Cyle Green; grandchildren Daijah & Nabria Hook; Solange & Quincy Dayas; and Jordyn & Aison Green; sister, Cynthia Adams; brothers Mack Henderson Jr., Gordon Henderson, Larry Henderson, and Greg Gass; brother-in-law Henry Adams; brother-in-law Maurice Bilal Hook; sister-in-law Ambra Hook; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
